There are few things more enjoyable than going on a long road trip. While flying to a destination may be the quickest option, driving allows you to actually see all of the ground that you’re covering. Plus, it’s unlikely that you’ll ever feel as free as you do when you’re behind the wheel on the open road, with the ability to go wherever you please.
With that said, you’ll need to put some work into ensuring that your vehicle is ready for the roads. In this post, we’ll run through a few key steps to take before you hit the open road.
Have It Looked At
Your vehicle might be navigating trips to the supermarket and work just fine, but will it be able to handle the stresses and strains of a long road trip just as well? Your vehicle will be put under more pressure than ever when you’re taking a trip, especially if you’re visiting mountainous areas where you’ll be driving in high altitudes. You can ensure that your vehicle is fully able to meet the demands it's put under by having it looked at by a mechanic before you set off on your journey. It’s much easier to fix a potential problem while you’re still at home, rather than when you’re in the middle of nowhere!
Deep, Deep Clean
Your car will likely return home from your road trip very much in need of a deep clean. But it should start the trip in a state of cleanliness. This isn’t so much to do with the vehicle itself, but rather your enjoyment of being in the vehicle. It’s much nicer to go on a long road trip when the vehicle you’re driving is spotlessly clean both inside and out. You can do this yourself if you have time (this article outlines how to clean your car like a pro), or you can just take a trip to your local car washing service.
Get Serious About Entertainment
It’s a good idea in general to think about how you’ll stay entertained when you’re driving through the boring stretches of your road trip journey. But when you have children accompanying you on the trip, entertainment becomes outright essential. It’s recommended to download some podcasts, playlists, and audiobooks that the whole family will enjoy. Remember that your children will need to be entertained more than the adults will, look at adding a car tablet holder to your vehicle so that they can watch videos in the back. You might assume that the stunning views you’ll pass will be enough to keep your children occupied, but it’s always best not to underestimate how quickly children can become bored!
Check Your Insurance
This will likely only be relevant if you’re visiting another country. For example, if you live in the United States but you’re planning to include trips to Canada or Mexico in your road trip. At that point, you’ll need to check that your insurance covers you for anything that might happen while you’re in those neighboring countries. Remember that accidents can happen in the blink of an eye, so even if you’re only dipping into foreign territory for a few minutes, it’s important that you have insurance.
Add Some Emergency Supplies
You never know what will happen when you embark on a road trip. If luck is on your side, then those surprises will be pleasant. But they could also be less than pleasant — for instance, breaking down in the middle of nowhere. While you can’t always predict what will happen, you can predict how you’ll respond. Look at putting together an emergency box that includes warm blankets, jumpstart cables, flashlights, and perhaps even a flare gun if you’re planning to visit some truly wild areas. You’ll hope that you never need the stuff that you’ve packed, but you’ll be thankful you took the time to put together the supplies if you do.
Load Up On Snacks
Again, this tip is handy for all people embarking on a road trip, but it’s especially useful for people who are traveling with their kids in tow. If there’s one thing that you’ll hear time and time again from your children, it’s “I’m hungry.” Having plenty of snacks and drinks handy will ensure that you always have something to give them, which will prevent you from having to stop every hour or so. It’s best to keep your snacks mostly healthy (think carrots, bananas, things like that) with a couple of tasty treats thrown in for fun.
