From St. Lucia to Maldives: A Guide to Tropical Getaways for Honeymooners

St. Lucia

Something borrowed, something blue, something tropical? When celebrating newlywed bliss, a tropical getaway makes for the perfect destination for couples to sit back, relax and find the oasis they’ve been yearning for. Whether it’s lounging by a beach, hiking in the rainforest or gazing at mesmerizing views, these tropical islands are the best places for couples to celebrate their recent nuptials.

St. Lucia

Recognized as a more upscale getaway, this Eastern Caribbean island makes for the perfect honeymoon destination. With its’ chalky beaches, isolated resorts and green rainforests, St. Lucia has plenty of romantic and fun activities to offer.  For newlyweds, a Saint Lucia honeymoon is the perfect way to begin your new life together - exploring volcanoes, enjoying refreshing waterslides, and swimming in the turquoise sea.  For first-time visitors, it should be noted that activities are normally based on whether visiting the northern or southern side of the island. The northern side is more populated and features more activities geared for tourists such as, shopping and sightseeing. The southern half of the island is more rural and ideal for adventurous activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving and hiking.

Residing in the southern side is the Pitons, two mountainous volcanic plugs that have become the national symbol for the island and a great hiking spot. Hikers can also climb Mount Soufrière, a volcano that is known to emit sulfurous steam rather than lava. In Spring, the travel destination kicks off its’ St. Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival where Ziggy Marley, Diana Ross and the late Amy Winehouse have previously headlined. The luxurious hideaway includes relaxing beaches such as, Anse Chastanet, which is picturesque for its’ clear water and peaceful ambiance. For those seeking a setting different from a beach, honeymooners can visit the Diamond Botanical Gardens and Waterfall, a 6-acre attraction filled with colorful flowers and luscious greenery.

Visitors can also relax in the on-site mineral baths and enjoy a fine dining experience at the various eateries. Five-star hotels on the island include: the Jade Mountain Hotel, Capella Marigot Bay Resort and the Ladera Estate.

St. Kitts and Nevis Islands

St. Kitts and Nevis Islands

Although the two luxurious islands can fly under the radar in the Southern Caribbean, they are both equally breathtaking and offer romance and adventure. For honeymooners seeking a more relaxing stay, the secluded Nevis island is the most ideal. Couples can lounge on their famous Pinney’s beach, which runs 4 miles along the island’s shore. Honeymooners can also enjoy snorkeling at Oualie Beach. For couples seeking fun, St. Kitts makes for a better choice. Every June a music festival is held on the island, where visitors can enjoy the Caribbean music, culture and life. Visitors can also enjoy the several golf courses offered and tour the Brimstone Fortress, which is recognized as one of the best-preserved forts of the Americas. During the winter, St. Kitts has their annual carnival, which includes music, parades, pageants, etc.

A special feature of both islands are their black sands, which can be seen along the shores of both locations. The islands offer a diverse selection of eateries that serve Italian, Moroccan, Asian and Spanish food. Five-star resorts on the islands include: the Four Seasons Resort in Nevis, the Nisbet Plantation Beach Club and the Ottley's Plantation Inn in St. Kitts, where guests can enjoy a Mango Orchard Spa and 65-foot pool.

Maldives

Maldives

If you’re looking for a getaway that’s centered on the beach alone, Maldives may just be the perfect destination. A remote island in the Indian Ocean, the destination features white-sand beaches, luxurious resorts, picturesque ocean surrounding and the perfect location for watersports. Known as a "diver’s paradise," honeymooners can partake in nighttime snorkeling, which allows divers to gaze at the aquatic life in the crystal clear water. For tourists traveling, it should be noted that all the Maldivian resorts rest on their own island.

Any facilities and activities near the hotel are the only options travelers have, so choosing the hotel location should be based on what facilities travelers find interesting and require careful planning. Five-star resort located on the island is the Velassaru Maldives, which features a picnic bar, on-site shopping, spa treatment, fitness classes and outdoor water activities. Honeymooners can also stay at the Kihaa Maldvies Resort, which also includes spa treatments and fun activities for guests such as, tennis lessons, motor boating and water skiing.

Dominica

Dominica

Over 60 percent of the island is covered in rainforest, making this a honeymooner’s Garden of Eden. Although beautiful, this location is more for the exotic adventures, rather than lounging by a beach. Dubbed the ‘nature island,’ honeymooners can partake in guided rainforest hikes and visit the jungle rivers. Secluded waterfalls rest the island, making for the perfect locations for photographs. Couples can take a romantic dip in the Emerald Pool, located in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park.

Popular attractions include the Boiling Lake, where couples can hike up to a crack in the earth where hot gases vent from molten lava. Couples can also hike a short trail that runs from the Papillote Wilderness Retreat to a platform that allows for a picturesque view of the Trafalgar Falls.  If you’re looking for the perfect hotel to stay in, look no further than the Rosalie Bay Resort and Beau Rive Resort, both surrounded by lush and green surroundings of the island. The most ideal time to travel to the Dominica rests between Feb. through June, for it is known as the island’s driest months.

Whether you want to lounge by the beach or have some adventure, these five romantic getaways make for a perfect honeymoon destination.
