"Ever since we opened Island Prime/C Level we knew we wanted to do something in the adjacent space. Originally we were eager to revamp the historic Reuben E. Lee boat which had been docked in the waterfront location for nearly forty years, but ultimately the structure had deteriorated to the point where it could not be rehabbed. The next logical step was to build from the ground up. The entire project took us roughly 9 years from the initial stages to opening---it's been a true labor of love. We have been planning a modern Mexican concept for some time, we were just waiting for the right venue," said David Cohn, founder of Cohn Restaurant Group.
You can never go wrong with Mexican food in San Diego and Coasterra’s Chefs Gray and Scott are creating a Mexican cuisine with a focus on bold flavor combinations with fresh, seasonal ingredients. Sharable starters include ordering from the tableside guacamole cart with specialty add-ins like lobster, crab, and shrimp, or the Tostada de Atun with soy, garlic and sesame oil glazed tuna, crispy tortilla, creamy coleslaw and cilantro sprouts. Signature dishes include the Mar y Tierra, a savory blend of beef short rib, Oaxacan mole, lobster risotto cake, and charred asparagus, as well as the Tamal de Champinon with crispy criminis, goat cheese, pomegranate seeds, and topped with smoked poblano cream.
Along with the exquisite Mexican cusine, Coasterra is the premiere venue for weddings, business banquets and special occasions. The design is offers breathtaking views of the San Diego Harbor. The interior and exterior of the restaurant has massive abstract murals by local Mexican artist Rafael Lopez.
Once they were all in for the new build, there was no question that they were going to create the city's most unforgettable new wedding and events venue. With their tenured experience at some of their other destinations such as the Prado and Vintana, they knew taking advantage of their bayfront location on the San Diego Harbor would be paramount. So they built the city's first floating event pavilion which will accommodate 500-- brides and grooms can literally dance on water. In addition, there an indoor banquet room for 300 people and a massive event deck for receptions, tapas, and cocktails
What makes Coasterra unique compared to other Cohn Restruarants is "Coasterra has just about everything under one roof and the stunning skyline views are seen from every area in the venue. We built it to be a lasting, iconic restaurant and event space for the city we love ---we want families and friends to celebrate their cherished life memories with us. When people walk in the most common reaction is 'WOW', and that is exactly what we hoped to accomplish," continued Cohn.
