How to Babyproof Your House and What You Will Need

Without a shadow of a doubt, having a baby is one of the most exciting things you will ever experience. It is also, however, simultaneously terrifying! There is so much to think and worry about that it can all end up being a little overwhelming.

One of the biggest concerns many new parents have is whether their house is safe and secure for a baby to grow up in. This is, fortunately, a relatively easy situation to fix. In this article, you will find all the top tips for babyproofing your home and making it safe for your newborn.

Safety Gates

One of the most apparent safety tips is to buy and install safety gates on doorways. As the range over at www.babyandco.com shows, you can get them in various sizes to fit any necessary gaps in your home. These gates can stop your newborn from accessing the stairs, kitchen, or other potentially dangerous rooms. They are easy for an adult to manage as they are openable with just one hand, leaving your other hand free for baby carrying or one of the million other tasks you may be busy with when parenting!

Crib and Crib Safety

Of course, you want your baby to be safe at night as well as in the daytime, so a proper crib is essential. You want a crib with high enough sides to ensure that your child can't climb out, even as they grow bigger and learn to stand. This can mean upgrading cribs quite quickly or buying one big enough for a toddler early on.

It would be best if you also considered the safety of the crib and surrounding areas. It may be collapsible or have an openable door, in which case make sure all mechanisms are safely secured and not able to catch little fingers! Also, you may want to consider placing the crib quite low down and on top of a super soft rug. That way, if any accidents or falls do happen, your baby can avoid an/y hard landings.

Cabinet Locks

When you look around the kitchen and living areas, you probably notice many cabinets and cupboards that look a lot like potential hazards. Little curious minds love to try and open doors and seek new things. However, there are quality cabinet locks available to help prevent any access to unwanted areas. These spring-loaded locks placed at the top of a cupboard door will stop little ones from getting into cupboards or getting their fingers stuck in any hinges.

High Storage

They were sticking with storage and one of the most common places in a home - the cupboard under the sink. These cupboards tend to contain all manner of cleaning products, including substances that could be incredibly harmful to kids. Now, you could place a cabinet lock on a cupboard like this. But, there is a slim chance that one could fail, leaving all of these products exposed to a young child.

Instead, it is recommended to use or even install new higher storage. Cleaning products are super dangerous, so placing them four to six feet above ground level means that, even when the kids reach a couple of years old, they still won't access any bleach or nasty chemicals.

Outlet Covers

Babies love to explore. Once they can crawl, they don't stop! And once they start walking, you'll struggle to keep up. As mentioned, they love to learn. As they explore the world, they try to understand their surroundings by grabbing things, usually with wet hands. Combining this with a power outlet could be an awful situation. So, it is highly recommended to keep all switches in the off position and fill any empty sockets with outlet covers.

Bathroom Safety

It's often recommended to keep your toilet door locked from the outside. This is excellent advice when you have young ones. But, even the best of us forget to do this sometimes. So, there are a few other tips, just in case the kids do access the bathroom.

Firstly, toilet seat locks are a must. It sounds crazy, but a toilet is big enough for small ones to get trapped in, which could be a disaster. Also, much like the kitchen, keep your medicine and toiletries cabinet high up and locked.

These simple tips and tricks can help you rest easy, knowing that, even if your kid does explore, you've made the house as safe as possible. When you have a newborn, every little thing like this helps make your life a little easier.
