How You Can Help a Charity That Saves Lives
It has been estimated that homelessness has gone up by as much as 5 percent since last year in San Diego. With homelessness in San Diego on the rise, places like the San Diego Rescue Mission are essential and need community support to expand their programs.
What is the San Diego Rescue Mission?
Beginning in 1955, the San Diego Rescue Mission has been providing food, clothing, and spiritual direction to the homeless community of San Diego. Since then, they have opened several different facilities and incorporated several different programs to accommodate the changing needs of the homeless population. For example, in 1960 the Mission made local history by opening the first shelter for women and children in the county. Today, the mission has expanded into a thriving faith-driven shelter that has, in the last year, successfully sheltered 157,826 people, provided 399,647 meals, and collected 2,410,952 pounds of food. The Mission flourishes by starting with the basis of Christian principles and teaching the homeless about Christ so they can then begin to heal and address the main causes of homelessness (mental illness, addiction, abuse, chronic homelessness, etc.). Through bringing the homeless to Christ, the San Diego Rescue Mission hopes to provide the encouragement needed to help the homeless get out of their situation.
